Dr Sedick Isaacs – More than just a Game

It’s day 3 of the icessd Conference at UWC . The conference was started off with thanks to the various sponsors and partners that have been playing an intriguing part in this conference. After that a brief summary of Day 2 was given by Dr. Clemens Ley.

First topic on the agenda was:

THE SOCIAL IMPACT AND THE 2010 FIFA SOCCER WORLD CUP AND LESSONS LEARNED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH SPORT BEYOND 2010.

The chairs for this topic were: Dr. Gerhard Jordaan and Prof. Marion Lees.

Dr. Sedick Isaacs was the first speaker up with his very touching story. When he began his 13 year detention on Robben Island, he was 23 years old. The lanky Isaacs are pedantic, careful and supremely capable. His little moustache and rushed mumble suggest a superficial resemblance to a person tangled up in an internal web of intellectual chaos; but this impression is deceptive: Sedick the bomb-maker on the mainland and Sedick the sports administrator on Robben Island had a crystal-clear view of the world around them, and approached every task with the clean, structured attitude of a scientist.

Dr Isaacs talked about his journey as a Former prisoner on a Island where football was his only hope , he mentioned how important sports are to develop Health and Fitness, develop communities and develop oneself’s character. He also stars in a movie called  More Than Just A Game which follows the story of how political activists who were unjustly imprisoned on Robben Island in the 1960s rise above their incarceration by creating a football league, the Makana Football Association (Makana FA), and find an outlet for their passion and commitment to discipline through football.

Is it Open and why should you care

Guest Post by Veera Uusoksa
Would you buy a house without getting the blueprint? Would you buy a car without being in control of where, when and by who you take it for a service? Surely you would not. And yet we purchase and use software that does not come with a blueprint and does not allow us to make changes or customize when we need to.
Is the software you are using legal? Are you paying the license fees? Do you know if you need to pay? Did you actually purchase the software or did you copy it from a friend? Might not be a train smash on your own computer at home (except the small fact that it might be illegal) but running a business with illegal software… not so clever.
To all of our software needs there is an open source alternative. Be it counting, image processing, making music, listening to music, writing a novel or chatting with friends. Choosing a free software gets you out of trouble with licence fees. There is none. You can use the software as you like in so many computers you need to and copy it to friends. For free.
When you choose a programme that has open source code, you get the blueprint. You (or the guy next door) can see how the software is made, learn from it and develop it further when the need arises. Thus creating local skills for local needs.
Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), Open Source Software (OSS) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software#Open_Source_Definition. You can call it what you want as long as that is what you are supporting. It is all about making an educated choice.

Screaming Gadget…5

We managed to persuade a man to test the gadget today. Clinton Liederman was brave enough to humour us by agreeing to be a guest on our video. Watch what he says about the Personal Alarm from Ila Dusk.

Screaming Gadget…4

This is the fourth video in our Screaming Gadget series. We put one of our friends’ Shameez Liederman on the spot yesterday and asked her if she is brave enough to test this device. Watch the video to see her reaction.

This is the Personal Alarm from Ila Dusk based in the UK. It should be used in case of an emergency. Eg. When you are being attacked or you think someone is following and you are not feeling very safe. The screaming device will alert people around you that something is wrong and that you need some help. We haven’t tested it in a live attack yet. It is quite interesting to see how women react to this device when asked to test it. First the device screams on activation then the woman screams and laughs at the same time because of the high decibel screeching sound the device makes and maybe just pure shock!

More video’s will follow as we ask various individuals to test the device and tell us what they think and if it will help them.

She’s the Geek Interviews: Geraldine Somerset

Geraldine, tell our readers a little about yourself and what you do?

Has technology changed your life in any way?

Unbelievably,  I rely heavily on technology as most of my work is interacting in some way daily. Use skype a lot, can share my screen to assist and resolve clients questions and problems.

Take us through a typical day in your life.

  1. Check emails and respond.  Emails can consist of all or either of the following:
    1. Support e-learning site, student documents/learning material up/download (Moodle software which is shareware)
    2. Client support with software issues relating to word, excel, powerpoint, outlook etc. Technical support with camera downloads, vcards, explorer filing, change passwords, a variety.
    3. Business related responses for training, consulting etc
  2. Training (if booked) is either a full day (09h00 – 16h00) or workshop (3 hrs)

If I’m not training, focus on my blog. Goal is to get at least one blog post of my own written and posted per week, check the social media; facebook, linkedIn, twitter, read and respond if necessary.

  1. Sell office software tracking program that runs offsite, servers maintained by international company, support and train staff.
  1. Weekends 6 hours plus: write training manuals which will shortly be sold off my website, Aligned to the ISETT SETA/ICDL  standards.  Generally attend to anything that’s outstanding.

What are your current projects?

Putting together a training course with Karen Lotter on social media which we’d like to present in all the provinces.  I’m the techo,  karen’s the journalist. Teach the tools and writing techniques.

Why do you Blog?

  • Such a “lekker” way to interact and share knowledge.
  • Entice the public to notice my expertise (in my field) and gain business.
  • Share general techno information that continually causes problems through lack of understanding. Posts that help people over those little bumps
  • Business related articles where the general public seem to lack understanding ie writing a CV.  Articles are researched and presented acknowledging the original content/writer.

What is the best gadget you ever played with?

My CoolPix (Nikon) camera, now outdated.

What social media tools do you use?

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Buzz, foursquare, Stumble, Flickr, Picasso

How many hours do you spend on the Internet?

At a guess depending on whether I train or not, approx 3 – 5 hrs.

What advice would you give to a newbie starting out  ?

Read/research to get ahead of the pack, fast forward the process rather than working blind and bumbling along

What are your top 5 favourite websites?

Blogressive.com  Mashable.com, About.com, Make use of.com, Mike Saunders.co.za

Where do you look when you need a little inspiration?

Work – the above websites, personal – Osho, Depak Chopra

So what can we expect from you in 2010 and beyond?

  • Encourage businesses to use social media as an additional tool for advertising and gain more interest from the public.
  • Strive to improve computer training to be a more value driven process. Businesses don’t encourage their staff to get certified/qualified. (I’m a qualified moderator – End User Pc training, A+)
